Uplifting Teen Moms with the FSS Parenting Support Group
To close out the 2025-2026 school year, TVHC’s Family Support Services (FSS) recently held a final meeting of their Teen Parenting Support Group at Burke Academy.
Facilitated by FSS Program Supervisor Nelly Flores-Velasco and FSS Case Manager Alejandra Quintero, the group provided a safe and supportive environment for teen mothers to strengthen their parenting knowledge, build confidence, and connect with valuable community resources.
A total of 11 teen mothers actively participated in the group. Throughout the year, participants engaged in interactive discussions and activities focused on a variety of topics, including nutrition, parenting skills, infant care and safety, financial education, stress management and coping strategies, and child development.
“I have a closer relationship with my child and my classmates as I experience motherhood for the first time,“ shared one of the participants. “I feel supported and have learned the skills to be the best parent to my child after attending group this year.”
The group also served as an important bridge to healthcare and supportive services. Of the 11 participants, 6 were already established patients with TVHC. Through participation in the group, 3 additional students were successfully introduced to TVHC healthcare services and established both medical and dental care.
Additionally, 7 participants enrolled in FSS, allowing them to access ongoing support, resources, and individualized services to help meet their personal, educational, and parenting goals.
The success of the program highlights the value of school-based partnerships and early intervention efforts in strengthening healthy family relationships and promoting positive outcomes for teen parents and their children. Thank you, Nelly and Alejandra, for facilitating this important group!
