Healthy Bites: Families Building Nutritious Habits
TVHC’s Community Outreach and Advocacy (COA) team recently wrapped up a successful round of Healthy Bites, a 6-session cooking and nutrition program designed to help families learn how to prepare healthy, affordable meals at home.
Each session focused on a different area of nutrition, from understanding carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, to learning how to read nutrition labels, shop smart, and create delicious recipes together. Families not only gained valuable knowledge, they got to practice what they learned by cooking together, bringing home fresh groceries each week, and even taking a guided grocery store trip to put their skills to the test.
“Participating in the Healthy Bites cooking classes was such a rewarding experience for me and my daughter,” shared one participant. “I learned how to prepare healthy recipes that I can now make at home for my family. What made this program even more special was the opportunity to bond with my daughter through fun, hands-on learning activities. We had so much fun together while also learning valuable information about nutrition and healthy eating.”
For others, Healthy Bites provided the push to make lasting lifestyle changes:
“One of the biggest changes I’ve made is giving up soda,” another participant said. “I now enjoy making aguas frescas at home using fresh fruits. It’s a healthier and refreshing option that my whole family loves. This program has truly helped me take steps toward a healthier lifestyle, and I’m so grateful for the support and knowledge I received.”
Families also discovered that learning together can be transformative and fun:
“What made this experience even more special was being able to attend with my daughter. She learned how to read nutrition labels, which has helped us both become more mindful of what we’re eating. One of our favorite moments was preparing a family breakfast together using what we learned. In addition to being healthy, it was fun and brought us closer as a family.”
Healthy Bites offered families an opportunity to gain confidence in the kitchen, strengthen bonds, and build lasting habits that support better health. By focusing on practical skills, hands-on learning, and culturally relevant recipes, COA continues to empower families to take charge of their nutrition and overall well-being.
Thank you to our wonderful participants and to our amazing COA team for making Healthy Bites such a meaningful program!
