Empowering Patients: Mother Embarks on Social Work Degree Journey, Inspired by her Case Manager

TVHC’s Family Support Services (FSS) Program recently reported a patient success story of a mother applying for college after being inspired by her case manager to pursue social work!

The client, who has been enrolled in the FSS program for over two years, was solely focused on raising her young children upon starting the program.

During a recent visit, the mother spoke to her case manager about going back to school, stating, “I would like to do what you do.”

The case manager began exploring various helping professions with the mom to determine next steps and assess her readiness to apply to school, however the thought of going back to school gave her a lot of anxiety. The case manager and mom identified and set small goals in the hopes that it would be less overwhelming and anxiety-provoking.

During a recent visit, the mother stated she was ready to apply for college. The case manager assisted her in applying to a local community college which had daycare on site for her two-year-old son. She also reached out to a college counselor on her own for additional support.

The mom is currently waiting to hear if she has been accepted to attend college. She plans to take general education courses at the community college then transfer to a local university to get a degree in Psychology or Social Work.

Thank you to our FSS team for the inspirational work you do every day for all your patients to help them grow and thrive!
