October 2024 CEO Update
October has been an exciting and forward-focused month for Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center and the broader health center movement, filled with impactful discussions and new leadership opportunities.
I had the honor of attending California Primary Care Association’s (CPCA) Annual Conference and I’m thrilled to begin my role as Chair of the CPCA Board of Directors. The 30th-anniversary conference celebrated our collective achievements over the past three decades and set the stage for a dynamic future for community health centers (CHCs) and our partners throughout California.
A special thank you to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra for joining us at the conference and engaging with me and other health center leaders. During the meeting, Secretary Becerra reflected on the critical role that health centers have played during and beyond the pandemic. He highlighted the administration’s commitment to lowering prescription drug costs and increasing healthcare access, recognizing how CHCs are critical to advancing health equity across the nation.
In our conversation, I emphasized the need for additional workforce funding and training opportunities and critical investments to help health centers transition to value-based care. Funding for data analytics and tools, workforce education and training, and greater flexibility during this transition is essential to improving care delivery and access. Along with my colleagues from other health centers, we also discussed other key issues like workforce challenges, same-day visit reimbursement, and integrating responsible AI in healthcare. Additionally, I want to thank Jeffrey Reynoso, Regional Director at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, for his engagement and ongoing partnership in these efforts.
The CPCA Conference was a fantastic platform to explore critical topics, from workforce development and advocacy to technological innovation in care delivery. I also had the pleasure of speaking at a rally in favor of Prop 35, which could bring billions in funding to expand primary care, specialty services, community health resources, and more to the communities we serve.
With TVHC serving over 35,000 patients, the majority of whom are Latino and dependent on Medi-Cal, funding from Prop 35 will allow us to reduce health disparities, improve our services, and expand access for our most vulnerable populations. I encourage everyone to stay informed on Prop 35, as it directly impacts our ability to provide high-quality care to underserved populations. For more information, click here.
As I embark on this new role, I am truly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the incredible individuals and leaders committed to advancing our shared mission. Working alongside the CPCA Board and passionate professionals across the state, I am excited to bring new ideas to help us meet the unique challenges of the evolving healthcare landscape. A special shout-out to Dr. Rakesh Patel, the CPCA Board’s most recent Chair, whose thoughtful leadership and guidance, along with that of CPCA CEO Francisco Silva, has been invaluable in achieving important legislative wins this past year and preparing us for the year ahead.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to building a healthier future for our communities.
Warm regards,
Andrea Schwab-Galindo
