Celebrating Community Impact: COA Presents Photovoice Project

TVHC’s Community Outreach and Advocacy (COA) department, alongside our dedicated Promotoras, recently had the honor of presenting their final Photovoice project at the Alameda County Public Health Department’s Showcase event.

This project was an opportunity for COA to reflect on the impact of their work over the past few years—beginning in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic—through a county grant that supported community outreach efforts.

To tell this story, Promotora volunteers and Community Health Outreach Workers (CHOWs) captured powerful images that illustrated the resilience they helped build in the community. Their photos and personal reflections highlighted the vital role they played in connecting families to resources, addressing health disparities, and fostering trust in times of uncertainty. The project culminated in a final video showcasing these images, along with poster board presentations that participants shared in a gallery walk during the showcase.

During the presentation, Community Outreach Manager Selena Romero-Pérez highlighted the difficulties communities faced in accessing COVID-19 testing in the early days of the pandemic and how TVHC stepped up to provide widespread access to both testing and vaccines for our most vulnerable populations.

She also expressed deep gratitude to all the participants and community partners who made this work possible, including the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, Ruby’s Place, Kidango, Eden United Church of Christ, and the Alameda County Public Health Department. Their collaboration played a critical role in ensuring that essential health services reached those who needed them most.

The Photovoice project is a testament to the strength of community-driven efforts and the lasting impact of grassroots outreach. As we continue this work, we remain committed to fostering partnerships and empowering our communities through education, advocacy, and accessible healthcare.
