Celebrating 20 Years of TVHC’s Promotoras Program

On October 20th, TVHC celebrated 20 years of the TVHC Promotoras Program and honored Promatoras from all eras of the program. From the core members who started the program, those who became our community heroes during COVID-19, to new graduates leading the next charge of advocacy, it was an evening dedicated to honoring their impact.

Mariachi kicked off the event with special guests Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas, Alameda County Supervisor Elisa Márquez, Assemblymember Liz Ortega, and San Leandro Mayor Juan Gonzales, who celebrated the Promotoras and their accomplishments.

“Over the past 20 years, the TVHC Promotoras have impacted thousands of lives; many continued working in the community, became TVHC employees, and others started their own businesses,” said CEO Andrea Schwab-Galindo during her speech. “All of them are respected in our communities for the work they have done and continue to do in providing health literacy, advocating for their neighbors, and being leaders in the community.”

During the conference, Francisco J. Silva, the President & CEO of CPCA, provided updates on the actions being taken to support community health centers, enabling their innovative efforts and work being done to register and mobilize voters in California with My Vote. My Health.

The TVHC Promotoras Program began in 2002 as an initiative to support the residents of our communities in actively participating and taking control of their health and disease prevention.

Since the founding of the program, more than 600 Promotoras have been trained extensively in leadership, health issues, and resources to make a difference in their communities. With this training, Promotoras bring this new knowledge back to the community and help educate others for better access to health issues and other resources.

“Thank you to all the Promotoras for being here tonight as we gather to celebrate and honor your contributions to our community,” said TVHC Board President Nancy Soto during her opening remarks. “We are extremely proud of your work and grateful for your impact on our community.”

This event was made possible by the late Richard Valle, former Alameda County Supervisor of District 2 and a strong supporter of the TVHC Promotoras Program. We are honored to be a part of Mr. Valle’s legacy. We are forever grateful for his generous contribution, which has allowed us to pay tribute to TVHC’s dedicated Promotoras.

Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate this milestone anniversary with us!
