Originally from Cartagena, Colombia, Andrea Schwab-Galindo brings nearly 20 years of experience in public health and nonprofit management to her role as Chief Executive Officer of Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center (TVHC), which she has held since early 2020. Her experience also extends internationally, where she worked with nonprofits in South America to implement microfinance, sustainability, and community health initiatives.
Andrea joined TVHC in January 2013 and has progressed through several key positions, including Compliance and Risk Management Manager, Director of Quality and Compliance, and Chief Administrative Officer, where she oversaw TVHC’s administrative departments including Human Resources and Marketing and Communications. Her journey reflects her deep commitment to the organization and its mission.
During her tenure as CEO, Andrea successfully guided TVHC through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on stabilizing the organization and enhancing the support provided to patients and staff. Under her leadership, TVHC has thrived, earning recognition for its vital contributions to the community.Â
Andrea is actively involved in various boards, currently serving on the California Primary Care Association (CPCA) board as Chair. She previously chaired the Legislative Committee. Additionally, she is a board member and Vice-Chair of the Strategic Committee of the Alameda Alliance for Health, the single managed care plan in Alameda County. She is also the Chair of the Community Health Center Network (CHCN) and Vice-Chair of the Alameda Health Consortium (AHC).Â
She holds two Bachelor’s degrees from the University of California, Berkeley—one in Legal Studies and another in Latin American Studies—as well as a Master’s degree in Public Health from San Jose State University. Andrea also earned a Master’s Certification in Corporate Health Care Compliance from George Washington University and completed leadership programs at the Healthforce Center at UCSF and UCLA. Andrea is also a 2023 Aspen Institute Health Fellow.Â
Under her guidance, TVHC received the 2021 California Nonprofit of the Year Award for its exceptional service during the pandemic, and in 2022, Andrea was honored as the 20th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year in the Health category.Â
Andrea is deeply future-oriented, dedicated to supporting innovative care models and diversifying revenue sources to enhance the sustainability of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). She believes in the importance of alternative payment models that align with the evolving landscape of healthcare. Under her leadership, TVHC is focused on strengthening its vision and impact by piloting care transformation, forging strategic partnerships and cultivating meaningful relationships within the community. Andrea recognizes the transformative potential of technology in improving patient care and operational efficiency, and she is committed to leveraging these advancements to ensure that TVHC remains at the forefront of delivering high-quality, accessible healthcare.Â
Andrea has called the Bay Area home for over 26 years. She enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends, traveling, and gardening. She resides in the East Bay with her husband, son, and two mischievous dogs.Â
